   COMMUNITY INFORMATION : SHOW LOW

The City of Show Low, located about 175 miles northeast of Phoenix, a popular high country hub for outdoor recreationists visiting the nearby White Mountains or the scenic lands along the Mogollon Rim. At an elevation of 6400-feet, Show Low is located in northeastern Navajo County off US 60. It is about a 3.5 hour drive from Phoenix. How Show Low got its name: It seems Marion Clark and Corydon E. Cooley, a noted Army scout during the Apache wars, were joint owners of a 100,000-acre ranch in 1875. Sometime later, they decided the place wasn't big enough for the both of them. To settle who moved, they agreed to play a card game called Seven Up. As the legend goes, the partners played all night. On the last hand, Cooley needed just one point to win. Clark turned his cards over and said, "If you can show low - you win." Cooley cut the deck, drew an unbeatable two of clubs and retorted, "Show low it is." And that was how the town was named.
